A special exhibition “Mysteries of Marimo – Where Did It Come From and Why is It Rounded? – 120 Years Since the Discovery of Marimo” will be held from the 22nd of August at the National Science Museum.<\/p>\n

EXHIBITING VALUABLE MARIMO
\nReal marimos are displayed at the venue. It is unusual for Marimo of Lake Akan to be exhibited outside Hokkaido.<\/p>\n

WHY IS MARIMO ROUNDED?
\nBecause Marimo has a structure that algal bodies are easily entangled, it becomes a thick mat on rocks and shells, which may peel off and develop into large chunks while drifting at the bottom of the lake. If it rotates with the power of the wave and stays in the shallow water, it develops into a round shape.<\/p>\n

At the exhibition, a “doctor of Marimo” demonstrated \u00a0reclamation technique for damaged Marimos.<\/p>\n

EFFORTS OF NATIONAL SCIENCE MUSEUM
\nAt the National Science Museum, staff are engaged in surveys of Lake Yamanaka and preservation of Marimos.<\/p>\n

\n* Opens until 8 PM on October 6th (Friday) and October 7th (Saturday)
\nAdmission fee: Only fee for permanent exhibition is required.
\n(Adults and college students: 620 yen (group 310 yen). High school students and younger, and 65 years old and elder: free)
