In 2021, the National Museum of Nature and Science (Director: Kenichi Shinoda) published an original large-format poster "Japanese pinnipeds" that summarizes illustrations of pinnipeds such as sea lions, otters, and seals that inhabit Japan. It will be on sale from Monday, August 30th at the National Museum of Nature and Science Museum Shop and the National Museum of Nature and Science Online Museum Shop.

\n For the original poster of the National Museum of Nature and Science, "Japanese Pinnipeds," we designed illustrations of Steller sea lions and fur seals that inhabit Japan, and five species of seals.
\n The realistic illustrations are by Toyomi Tanaka, a leading figure in animal ecology. The poster is an original product of the National Museum of Nature and Science, which was supervised and edited by Toyomi Tanaka, a researcher at the museum who specializes in marine mammals (Research Chief, Vertebrate Research Group, Animal Research Department). And I wrote a scale bar on the poster. You can see the size of the creatures and compare the size of each creature.<\/p>\n

Although they belong to the same group of pinnipeds, if you look closely, you can see that their bodies have differences and their characteristics. For example, Steller sea lions and fur seals have ears (auricles), but seals do not have ears (auricles). Seals aren't really deaf, and if you look closely around your face, you'll see a few holes in their ears. In this way, it is hoped that posters will deepen interest in Japanese pinnipeds.<\/p>\n
