Ueno Park, Tokyo | Over 200 dahlia plants of 120 varieties adorn the autumn gardens at the “Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden Special Festival: Autumn Garden of Dahlias,” held from September 19th (Sat) to November 3rd (Tue), 2026.

Autumn gardens to enjoy with Japanese umbrellas and a five-story pagoda

Ueno Toshogu Shrine (located in Ueno Park, Taito Ward, Tokyo) will be holding the "Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden Special Festival: Autumn Garden of Dahlias" from Saturday, September 19th to Tuesday, November 3rd, 2026.
This shrine is located in Ueno Park and enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, Tokugawa Yoshimune, and Tokugawa Yoshinobu.
This event attracts many visitors every year, with approximately 20,000 people attending last year.
The garden will display over 200 dahlia plants of 120 varieties, including the Akita Prefecture original "NAMAHAGE Dahlia" series. Varieties with different flower colors, shapes, and blooming styles will adorn the autumn garden. Early-blooming dahlias can be enjoyed in the early part of the garden's opening period, and the dahlias in the garden are expected to be in full bloom around mid-October when the heat subsides.

■ Akita Prefecture Original Variety "NAMAHAGE Dahlia" Series
"NAMAHAGE Dahlia" is an original dahlia variety series from Akita Prefecture, created in 2012. New varieties are added every year, and there are now over 40 varieties. You can see about 10 of these varieties at our garden.

■Dahlias with a variety of flower shapes
Dahlias are bulbous plants belonging to the daisy family, native to Mexico, and were introduced to Japan during the Edo period. Because of their peony-like appearance, they are affectionately known in Japanese as "Tenjiku Botan" (Indian Peony).
Here, we will introduce the main varieties that you will be able to see this time.

– A rare variety with flowers that bloom with a whimsical mix of deep red, pink, and white.

This popular variety is characterized by its dark red color with a hint of black.

– A variety in which smaller petals overlap the inside of uniformly arranged petals.

We will also be exhibiting varieties that will be displayed at our garden for the first time.

■Enjoy the autumn gardens with dahlias
Within the garden, you can enjoy dahlias amidst scenery unique to Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden, such as displays featuring Japanese umbrellas and views overlooking the former five-story pagoda of Kan'ei-ji Temple.

■ Photo spot
Along with dahlias and other flowers, seasonal decorations, container gardens, and bonsai trees will be set up throughout the garden. You can enjoy taking photos in various locations throughout the garden that are perfect for autumn.

■Autumn wildflowers that bloom alongside dahlias
In addition to dahlias, other flowers such as Sanguisorba officinalis, Eupatorium fortunei, and cosmos will bloom in succession within the garden. You can enjoy a variety of autumn flowers along with the dahlias.

We have been managing the dahlias and other flowers in the garden in preparation for the "Autumn Garden of Dahlias" event.
This year, too, the colorful dahlias will bloom in succession, and we hope you will enjoy the different colors and shapes of each flower.
Please take your time to enjoy the garden, which is unique to this season, along with the autumn flowers and the scenery that evokes the atmosphere of the Edo period.

■ Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden
The Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden was opened in April 1980 to commemorate Japan-China friendship, within the grounds of Ueno Toshogu Shrine, which enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. The strolling-style Japanese garden is planted with peonies, and currently cultivates 500 plants of 110 varieties in spring and 160 plants of 40 varieties in winter. In autumn, approximately 200 plants of dahlias (also known as Indian peonies) of about 120 varieties are displayed, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal flowers.
Located in the heart of Tokyo, yet surrounded by lush greenery, Ueno offers a chance to leisurely appreciate the Edo-period atmosphere.
