This summer, Tokyo’s art museums and galleries will be open until 9 PM every Friday [Summer Night Museum 2025]

Free admission for students after 5pm! Special rates for adults and those 65 and over!

Tokyo Metropolitan Cultural Facilities will be holding "Summer Night Museum 2025" again this year!
From Thursday , August 14th to Friday , September 26th , we will be offering special benefits such as extended opening hours until 9:00 pm every Friday night and discounted admission fees . Participating facilities are the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum , Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum , Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo , and Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery , a total of five museums. In addition to special benefits for visitors, this year we will also be hosting other exciting events such as a mini-concert "Museum x Music!" in collaboration with Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre , as well as talk events with exhibiting artists. Summer Night Museum is full of new discoveries. Come experience it for yourself!

Summer Night Museum 2025 Event Overview

Target dates : Every Friday from Thursday, August 14th to Friday, September 26th, 2025

*The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will hold the event every Thursday and Friday.

Participating facilities: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Ueno), Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (Meguro), Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Ebisu),

Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Kiyosumi Shirakawa), Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery (Shibuya)

Benefit 1: Opening hours will be extended until 9:00 p.m.

*The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will be open until 8:00 p.m.

② Admission Fee: Free for students after 5:00 PM, and discounts equivalent to group rates for adults and those 65 and older

*Students and those aged 65 and over must bring their student ID or proof of age.

① Mini Concert "Museum × Music!"

As a collaborative event between Tokyo Metropolitan cultural facilities, a concert planned and produced by Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre will be held at the museum and gallery. Enjoy an evening of synchronized sensations.

② Exhibition Talk & Performance

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will host an event featuring a guest lecturer, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will host an artist talk and music performance event and guided tour, and the Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery in Tokyo will host an art viewing session led by a curator.

■Van Gogh Exhibition: The Artist's Dream Continued by His Family [Dates: September 12th (Fri) – December 21st (Sun)]

How have the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) been passed down to the present day? In addition to over 30 of his works, mainly from the Van Gogh Museum, the exhibition will also feature four precious letters that will be on display in Japan for the first time.

This exhibition focuses on the "transition of function" of the architectural spaces of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum Main Building and the former residence of Prince Asaka, which have woven multiple layers of history in line with the trends of the times.

■ 30th Anniversary of the Museum Opening: Luigi Ghiri's Never-ending Landscapes [Dates: July 3rd (Thurs) – September 28th (Sun)]

This is the first solo museum exhibition in Asia of the work of Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992), a leading Italian photographer.

This exhibition will introduce landscapes composed of a variety of visual fragments, photographed by Ghirri from the 1970s through to his later years.

■Pedro Costa Inner Visions: 30th Anniversary of the Museum Opening [Dates: Thursday, August 28th – Sunday, December 7th]

This will be the largest solo exhibition in Japan of the Portuguese genius film director Pedro Costa (1959-).

The strong contrast of light and shadow and the tranquil composition of the picture raise questions about the state of the world.

Akira Sasamoto (1980-) is a New York-based artist who has been active in the fields of visual expression and performance art. This is his first mid-career solo exhibition, showcasing his work spanning approximately 20 years and tracing the evolution of his themes and techniques.

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum " Special Nighttime Opening: Cool Off in the Shitamachi Evening at the Open Air Architectural Museum"

This event will extend the school hours and allow you to spend a summer evening. On "Shitamachi Nakadori," lanterns and lights from the restored shops will be lit, creating a different streetscape than usual. In a traditional Japanese house, you can feel the cool evening breeze.

"Solve Mysteries at the Museum: Museum Rally 2025"

The Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, a public interest incorporated foundation, will be running the "Museum Rally 2025," in collaboration with Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. and the National Museum of Art, an independent administrative institution, where participants will visit eight museums and solve mysteries. This is an experiential art entertainment event that combines art appreciation and mystery solving.
