Ueno Marui will be hosting a pop-up event by Kameya Nippon Traditional Co., Ltd., titled "Cel Animation Experience and Japanese Craft Fair – Experience Drawing, See and Choose Crafts -" at the Calendarium on the 5th floor, for a limited time from July 18th (Sat) to August 2nd (Sun), 2026.
The venue will exhibit and sell crafts by artists active throughout Japan, including works by Living National Treasures. We offer an opportunity to experience the charm of traditional crafts up close and find your favorite piece.
In addition, we will be holding a workshop where you can experience the "cel animation" technique that was once used in Japanese animation production. In this age where digital production is the mainstream, opportunities to experience cel animation are rare, so you can easily experience its unique expression and the joy of creation.
Please enjoy this special event where you can experience the charm of two aspects of Japanese culture: traditional crafts and animation.

Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) are beloved lucky charms that bring good fortune, good relationships, and business prosperity. Each cat is unique, made using a special technique of attaching fabric to a base, resulting in no two having the same pattern. These Edo Kimekomi dolls are supervised by traditional craftsman Hisao Arai, with each stage of production, from wood preparation to kimekomi (wood inlay) being handled by specialized artisans.
