Geisai is coming to Ueno!
The Ueno 6-chome Shopping Street Association, in cooperation with the Geisai Executive Committee, will hold "Geisai 2026 x Ueno Machi Matsuri" on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in the Ueno 6-chome Shopping Street.
This special community event brings together local shopping districts and students from Tokyo University of the Arts, utilizing the power of youth and culture to showcase the many charms of the Ueno area.

The Geisai Mikoshi Procession, to be held on Sunday, September 6th from 12:00 to 13:00, will be an especially spectacular procession, featuring the Geisai's famous giant mikoshi (portable shrine), the Geidai Samba Club's samba party, and shop owners from Ueno Shopping Street. During the event, 1,000 yen lottery tickets that can be used in town will also be distributed.

This is a scene from last year's awards ceremony for the Geisai portable shrines. Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts collaborate to create four portable shrines. Only one of them is allowed to be paraded through the shopping district.

The Geisai Mikoshi, a festival known only to those in the know, is coming to town. First-year students from Tokyo University of the Arts, divided by department, spend the entire summer creating the mikoshi, which is truly a testament to their sweat and tears. You will be blown away by the sheer scale of the mikoshi when you see it in the middle of town!

On Friday, September 4th, the portable shrine of the department that won the Ueno 6-chome Shopping Street Association Award at the opening ceremony (judging) on the first day of the Geisai festival will parade through the shopping street. The Tokyo University of the Arts Samba Club's performance brought energy to the town!
Another popular attraction that grows year after year is the Geidai Samba Party! The history of the Geisai samba parade is long, and it is actually the origin of the Asakusa samba parade. The overflowing passion of the young Geidai students heats up the town! Don't miss the performances held in various formations throughout the area! Also, pay attention to the variety of percussion instruments!
The festival parades through the town accompanied by a portable shrine and a samba performance.
