From the 2016 performance

9PROJECT was formed by members who studied under Kohei Tsuka. They have previously staged many of Tsuka's early works from the 70s and 80s. For their 25th production, they will stage "Tsuka Kohei's Elopement '83," which was broadcast on NHK's "Galaxy Television Novel" slot in 1983.

A flawless man who loves her passionately and intensely, and a laid-back, easygoing, and comforting, yet flawed, man. A woman, torn between these two contrasting men, seeks a more dramatic life and decides to elope even though no one opposes her… At first glance, it may seem comical, but what you see here are people desperately trying to survive in life.

9PROJECT first staged this work in their third production in 2016. While it is a comedy, the numerous moving lines that draw you in before you know it are truly characteristic of Kohei Tsuka's work. For this revival, ten years later, we aim to further refine the original version and create a work that will be an inspiration to us living in the modern age.

This is a hymn to life, filled with Kohei Tsuka's unique humor and pathos, directed at "ordinary people" who live each day to the fullest!

STORY

"We're eloping! We're so excited!"

Yasuo, a young man who hasn't quite grown up, is currently staying at his fiancée Setsuko's house. He doesn't work and spends his days just loafing around. In the Hojo family, a matriarchal family for generations, it's customary to adopt a good-for-nothing man so that the women can run both the house and the company.
However, one day, shortly before her wedding, Setsuko receives a marriage proposal. The prospective groom is a businessman who runs a trading company with an annual turnover of 3 billion yen. Moreover, he has been in love with Setsuko for 15 years. Although she is captivated by the prospective groom, Setsuko cannot leave Yasuo, so she asks him to elope with her.
"Come on, take me. Take me away somewhere!"

They board a night train bound for Kyoto, the city of love. With no one to oppose them, the two begin their elopement, a gamble on their lives!
