[Tokyo National Museum] “Sumitomo Foundation Restoration Grant 30 Years Memorial Cultural Property, Forever” Press Release Report

The Tokyo National Museum Heisei Building will hold the “Forever For Cultural Properties,” a special project commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Sumitomo Foundation Restoration Grant, from October 1 (Tuesday) to December 1 (Sun), 2019.

Purpose of holding

A cultural property that has been repaired many times in a long time and that life is passed on to the next generation. There are many works that need repair right now, but repair requires knowledge, technology, and cost.
Since its establishment, Sumitomo Zaibatsu has provided a total of 1063 projects (745 domestic and 318 overseas) to support the maintenance and restoration of cultural properties in Japan and overseas, and as a distinctive program unique to other subsidizing organizations Has poured.

In a special project "Cultural Property, Forever" held to commemorate the project's 30th anniversary, part of the cultural property that has been restored with the support of the Sumitomo Foundation has been released. We will display various restoration works such as Buddha statues, pictures, documents, and historical materials at once, and aim to share the values that will be spun into the future with many people.

In addition to 5 national treasures and 22 important cultural properties , one of the famous items that have been carefully preserved throughout the country will be released (50 designated cultural properties designated by the local government).

★ The essence of the world's highest level of cultural restoration technology

The cultural property of fragile materials such as wood, paper and silk revives by the crystal of the wisdom that makes use of the latest technology , centering on the traditional technology that has been passed down from old times.

★ Cultural assets overcoming damage caused by natural disasters

Hanshin Awaji, Noto Peninsula, East Japan, Kumamoto …. We introduce the situation of cultural property damaged by big earthquake and the repair.

Exhibition works

The Tokyo National Museum is entitled, " I will meet Buddha protected and transmitted", and will display Buddha images that have been carefully protected and transmitted, including those damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

Valuable examples of the Kamakura period

It is a carved statue of Takanawa Amitabha haired like a rose, and is a statue of Tendaisou's high-rise yen.
In the repair, the loose members were dismantled and rejoined, and processing was performed so that the gold foil on the surface was not peeled off, and the graceful appearance of the time was restored.

The technique of engraving the head and body from a single tree and the rich expression of fleshing show that it is the production of the early Heian period. In the repair, the loose members are joined, and the holes and the like opened by insects are reinforced with resin. In addition, I removed the repainted color on the surface, and renewed the face.
