"Paris Pompidou Center Cubism Exhibition – Beauty Revolution From Picasso, Braque to Delaunay, Chagall" will be held in Tokyo and Kyoto. To do. This will be the first full-fledged exhibition in Japan in about 50 years to tackle Cubism head-on.



Created in the early 20th century by two artists, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Cubism revolutionized the history of Western art like never before.

The name comes from the fact that Black's landscape painting was described as a "cube" in 1908.
Cubism, which boldly challenged conventional beauty and opened up new possibilities for visual expression, had a great impact on young artists gathering in Paris, and sparkled in various fields including decoration and design, architecture, and stage art. It spread throughout the world during that time, and has had a decisive influence on the diverse development of art since then.
In this exhibition , a large number of valuable works that are indispensable in discussing the history of Cubism will come to Japan, and more than 50 of them will be exhibited in Japan for the first time . The rich development and dynamism of Cubism, which became the true starting point of 20th century art and opened new horizons, will be presented through about 130 works, including sculptures, drawings, prints, videos, and materials, centered on paintings by about 40 major artists. to introduce.

  • The highlight of this exhibition is the unprecedented number of works, 12 Picasso and 15 Black. All the works are first-class, but Braque's important work "Large Nude" (1907-08, first exhibited in Japan), which was inspired by Picasso's primitive nudes, and Picasso's Cubism representative of Center Pompidou. The painting Lady in an Armchair (1910) is a must-see .
    On the other hand, the paintings of painters called "Salon Cubists" who actively held group exhibitions at public exhibitions and established a school of Cubism different from Picasso and Braque, are popular works of the Pompidou Center. Robert Delaunay's masterpiece The City of Paris (1910-12), which is 4 meters long, will come to Japan for the first time . Also, stay tuned for five of Chagall's cohesive paintings, including one of his early masterpieces, In Russia, the Donkey, and Others (1911).
