The founder, who was a river guide on the Colorado River in Utah, USA, developed a sunglasses strap to solve the problem of sunglasses falling into the river while rafting. This was the first product of CHUMS, the “CHUMS Original Retainer”.

The company established a factory in Hurricane, Utah, created the brand mascot Booby Bird, and began developing apparel using sweatshirts. The brand, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023, continues to create items that people wish existed in their daily lives.

The “katsuo-tori” lives on the coastline from Ecuador to southern Mexico, and in the Ogasawara Islands in Japan. Because it is very friendly and not wary, South American fishermen call it “bobo,” which is the same word as the familiar “booby-trap” that is the second-lowest ranking.
