Since 2008, the National Museum of Nature and Science (Director: Kenichi Shinoda) has been registering important historical materials for science and technology (nicknamed Future Technological Heritage).
This year, we have newly registered 18 items such as electrically assisted bicycles and 3.5 inch micro floppy disks. This (15th) registration brings the total number of registrations to 343. A panel exhibition of the materials registered this time will be held at the National Science Museum from Tuesday, September 13, 2022 to Sunday, September 25, 2022.

At the National Museum of Nature and Science, “Historical materials on the history of science and technology that show important achievements in the history of the development of science and technology and are of great significance in terms of passing them on to the next generation,'' and “Remarkable materials on the state of people's lives, economy, society, and culture. In order to preserve and utilize the historical materials of science and technology that have had a profound impact, we have been conducting survey research activities in cooperation with related industrial associations and academic societies. These materials have lost sight of their original significance amidst the rapid development of science and technology, technological innovation, and changes in industrial structure in recent years, and are rapidly disappearing. The National Museum of Nature and Science established a registration system for important historical materials of science and technology in 2008 with the aim of preserving such materials and passing on the experiences of our predecessors who played a leading role in science and technology to the next generation. We have been conducting this since the fiscal year, and we have registered 325 materials so far, and we will register 18 new materials this time. (Total 343 cases)
*Future technology heritage (nickname): A nickname given to a legacy that should be handed down to the future among historical materials of science and technology in the past.
