“Paris Pompidou Center Cubism Exhibition – Revolution of Beauty: From Picasso and Braque to Delaunay and Chagall” held at Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto

Date: March 20, 2024 (Wednesday/Holiday) – July 7, 2024 (Sunday)

"Paris Pompidou Center Cubism Exhibition – Revolution of Beauty: From Picasso and Braque to Delaunay and Chagall", which is currently being held at the National Museum of Western Art (Ueno, Tokyo), will travel to the Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto [Date: March 20, 2024] Sunday (Wednesday/Holiday) to July 7th (Sunday)]. This is the first full-scale exhibition in Japan that focuses on Cubism head-on in about 50 years.

Cubism, created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in the early 20th century, brought unprecedented changes to Western art. Its name comes from the fact that in 1908, Braque's landscape paintings were described as "cubes." Rather than expressing space through traditional perspective and shading methods, the attempt to compose the picture plane using geometrically flat shapes freed painters from the Renaissance-era common sense that paintings reproduce reality. did. Cubism, which shocked young artists in Paris, quickly spread around the world and had a decisive influence on the diverse development of art that followed.

This exhibition is the first large-scale exhibition of Cubism in Japan in about 50 years , with approximately 130 works mainly from the collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris, which boasts one of the world's leading collections of modern and contemporary art. Through paintings and sculptures, including more than 50 works by approximately 40 artists who visited Japan for the first time , we will introduce the complete picture of Cubism, which was the true starting point of 20th century art.
