Gallery & Restaurant Behind the Scenes (Azabudai Hills) will be hosting an exhibition of new paintings by Aida Makoto, "The Road to Mixed Bathing." Aida has been at the forefront of contemporary art for over 30 years since his full-fledged debut as an artist at the "fo(u)rtunes" exhibition held at the Roentgen Art Institute in 1993. In the 2000s, he created several large-scale paintings, such as "Waterfall Painting" (2007-2010) and "Gray Mountain" (2009-2011), whose sensational expressions attracted widespread attention. For Aida, who has been continuously creating installations and video works in recent years, this will be his first exhibition of paintings in quite a while.

The new works shown in this exhibition are sprinkled with the touches of simulationism that Aida has long pursued. And more than anything, the humor in Aida's description of these paintings as "not glowing or moving" is itself a kind of critique of the activity of exhibiting in a space like Azabudai Hills. I hope many people will come to see the seeds of ideas that move back and forth between his aspirations for monumental large-scale works and his personal handiwork that is directly connected to everyday life.

Makoto Aida

Born in Niigata Prefecture in 1965. Graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1991. His style of work, which freely travels between the boundaries of society and history, the modern and pre-modern, and the East and West, with subjects such as beautiful girls, war paintings, and office workers, and presents unconventional contrasts and scathing criticism, has earned him overwhelming support from a wide range of generations. His range of expression is diverse, both domestically and internationally, including painting, photography, video, sculpture, and performance. His recent works include the novel "Geisai" (Bungeishunju, 2020) and the essay collection "Sex and Art" (Gentosha, 2022). His major solo exhibitions in recent years include "Sorry I'm a Genius" (Mori Art Museum/Tokyo, 2012-13), "The Unthinking Person" (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany/France, 2014), "GROUND NO PLAN" (Aoyama Crystal Building/Tokyo, 2018), and "Patriotism Won't Stop" (Mizuma Art Gallery/Tokyo, 2021).

Yuko Okada "Celebrate for ME 2024" (Art, Rice Vermicelli, or White Kitchen)

Art or Rice Vermicelli or Shirochu (Roppongi) will host "Celebrate for ME 2024," a solo exhibition by Yuko Okada.

"Celebrate for ME -The first step" was a one-day exhibition held at two venues in Jimbocho, Tokyo on December 26, 2023.

The experience centered around "Celebrate for ME:okuru," in which visitors can become their own "funeral attendant" using modified VR goggles and a human body doll, is a participatory piece guided by narration from Yuko Okada, which is inspired by the five funeral and celebratory ceremonies of "tsutsumu," "ikeru," "aruku," and "iwau."

This exhibition will document the events of those days through a video work, as well as props and costumes from that time, small works depicting each ritual, and sketches for the upcoming work "My Last Makeup."

There will also be video works that you can play on your smartphone while walking around the venue. It will be easier if you bring your own smartphone and earphones. We also recommend watching the videos while enjoying a meal or a drink.

Additionally, we are planning to hold an event on May 11th and 12th where people can actually experience the VR works.

Hiroko Okada

Contemporary artist. Using a wide range of media, he creates works that send messages to modern society. His works have been exhibited at numerous museums, galleries, and alternative spaces both in Japan and overseas.

His major works include "Engaged Body," which is themed around regenerative medicine, "The Child I Gave Birth," which depicts a male pregnancy, and "Celebrate for ME – The First Step," an audience-participation media art experience of a funeral, all of which use challenging methods to present a unique, futuristic worldview.

In addition to his personal activities, he also works on many art projects. He founded and presided over the alternative puppet theater "Gekidan Shiki" (2010-), with Aida Makoto as advisor. His projects include the art unit Aida Family (2001-), which is made up of Aida Makoto, Okada Yuko, and Aida Torajiro, and the W HIROKO PROJECT (2020-), an Art x Fashion x Medical endeavor that began amid the COVID-19 pandemic. His publications include the collection of works "DOUBLE FUTURE – Engaged Body/The Child I Gave Birth" (2019/Kyuryudo).

Torajiro Aida "Yume Tensei" (Uenoshita Studio)

Uenoshita Studio (ABAB UENO) will be holding a solo exhibition by Torajiro Aida titled "yume tensei."

In this exhibition, based on the artist's own dream experiences, trash and broken objects from his home and warehouse, as well as scraps from ABAB UENO, will be 3D scanned and reconstructed in a 3DCG software called Blender. During the exhibition, a live performance will be held in which the artist "plays while creating," going back and forth between coding and gameplay.

Torajiro Aida

He comes into contact with a variety of technologies, including language, blockchain technology, AI technology, law, programming languages, and operating systems, and explores previously unimagined uses for these technologies through software production and exhibitions. He was featured in the exhibition "Whose place is this, for adults and children to think about?" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2015. He won the Newcomer Award at the 21st Japan Media Arts Festival organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2017, and was selected for the 2018 Untrodden IT Talent Discovery and Development Program. Recent exhibitions include MEDIA AMBITION TOKYO 2020, MEDIA AMBITION TOKYO 2021, Sono Aida #Shin-Yurakucho "ART×NFT Meta Fair #01", and CCBT "Future Ideations Camp Vol.2 | setup(): Creating new rules with blockchain".
