Tokyo Metro and Matsuzakaya Ueno Store to Launch “Take the Metro to Ecofu! Campaign”

Wednesday, September 17, 2025 – Monday, October 20, 2025

The Matsuzakaya Ueno store, operated by Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Taito-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Akihiro Kosaka; hereinafter "Tokyo Metro") and Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Koji Munemori; hereinafter "Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores"), will be holding the "Take the Metro and Go to Ecofu! Campaign" from Wednesday, September 17th to Monday, October 20th, 2025. "Ecofu" is a reuse and recycling initiative organized by Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores through the collection of clothing, and is a project aimed at "reducing the burden on customers and the earth through environmentally friendly eco-friendly initiatives." Following on from last year, the two companies will jointly implement a campaign to promote "Ecofu" by riding environmentally friendly trains, thereby promoting decarbonization efforts.

Between September 17th (Wed) and October 15th (Wed) at Matsuzakaya Ueno store, customers who spend 500 yen or more (tax included) will receive a campaign sheet exclusively for participants. Then, between October 16th (Thurs) and 20th (Mon), take the campaign sheet onto a Tokyo Metro line, get a special stamp at Ueno-Hirokoji Station, Naka-Okachimachi Station, or Yushima Station, and drop it in the special box located at the Ecof venue on the 6th floor of Matsuzakaya Ueno store to be entered into a lottery for a chance to win luxurious prizes.

Tokyo Metro has set a long-term environmental goal, "Metro CO2 Zero Challenge 2050," and is working to reduce CO2 emissions from all operations, aiming to reduce them by 53% by 2030 (compared to 2013 levels) and to virtually zero by 2050. The company has also calculated the amount of CO2 emissions reductions achieved by using Tokyo Metro lines and announced that using Tokyo Metro contributes to an annual reduction of approximately 1.769 million tons of CO2 (equivalent to approximately 3% of Tokyo's CO2 emissions) compared to automobiles. Compared to other modes of transport, Tokyo Metro emits less CO2 and actively promotes itself as an environmentally friendly mode of transport, and is working with various stakeholders to promote initiatives that lead to the resolution of environmental issues.

Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Store has been hosting the "Ecofu Campaign" since 2016, a reuse and recycling initiative. Customers can bring unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, etc. to Daimaru/Matsuzakaya stores and exchange them for coupons that can be used for shopping. By reusing and recycling, Daimaru/Matsuzakaya is helping the environment on behalf of participating customers. To date, customers have donated over 7.4 million items, totaling approximately 2,168 tons (as of December 2024). Through the sustainable, participatory project "Ecofu," we are proposing a circular shopping style.

Tokyo Metro and Matsuzakaya Ueno, both of which share ties to the Ueno area , hope to use this campaign to provide an opportunity for people to learn about the environmental advantages of railways and EcoF, thereby encouraging people to take environmentally conscious actions and contributing to the realization of a carbon-free, recycling-oriented society. We hope you will have fun and take part.

8. Tokyo Metro's efforts to reduce environmental impact

Tokyo Metro has defined "Becoming an Earth-Friendly Metro" as one of its key sustainability priorities. Toward the realization of a decarbonized, circular society, the company has set a long-term environmental goal, the "Metro CO2 Zero Challenge 2050." To reduce its environmental impact, the company is proactively promoting energy conservation, including the development and introduction of energy-efficient rolling stock and the conversion of station lighting to LED. In terms of renewable energy utilization, the company plans to replace all electricity used on the Marunouchi and Namboku lines with hydroelectric power by 2024. It also procures environmental value through virtual PPAs (a contract in which consumers virtually procure only the environmental value of renewable energy from power producers) utilizing small-scale hydroelectric power generation and onshore wind power generation. The company has also been working to efficiently utilize resources (e.g., using recycled water in automatic train washers) and promote recycling and reuse (e.g., recycling and reusing train bodies and participating in the "Fly to Fly Project").
