【National Science Museum】 Special Exhibition “Large Mammals Exhibition 2 – Survival of Everyone” Private Brief Report

The special exhibition "Mammal Mammals Exhibition 2-The Survival of Everyone" is held at the National Science Museum from March 21, 2019 (Thursday) to Sunday, June 16, 2019. As we participated in the media preview, we will tell you about the exhibition!

That "large mammal exhibition" is back!

It will be held on a scale-up with the latest videos on more than 500 stuffed and skeletal specimens in 9 years from the "large mammals exhibition land / sea companions" in 2010, which has received great popularity.

The theme of this "large mammal exhibition 2" is "Everyone's survival strategy" .
Currently, mammals that are adapted and prosperous to most of the environment on earth, their ecology is extremely diverse and full of surprises.
In this exhibition, we will introduce strategies to “eat”, “produce and grow”, along with amazing devices and the latest research results, centering on locomotion (movement movement), which is a characteristic ability acquired by mammals.

Mark that eye! "Mammal march" of great power

In the center of the venue, there are a collection of stuffed specimens of mammals proud of the Science Fair. Its name is also "Mammal March" !
We have exhibited together about 200 stuffed specimens of mammals living in the sea and land.

In "Mammal march", there are lineages such as "Primates" and "Rodents" and taxis by classification. However, things that are different from one another in the same family, but similar to another family, etc. are full of surprises like "Eh ?!". I feel the wonder of the evolution of mammals that have been adapted to the environment by various "operations".

Also in the procession is the figure of the panda Rinrin ! Next to the Science Fair, Rinrin, who took his breath at Ueno Zoo in 2018, was taken to the Science Fair and stripped off. After death, many of the animals at Ueno Zoo will be taken to the museum and used as specimens. It will be studied more deeply by becoming a sample, and the result will be handed over to the next generation.

When you look up, giant creatures swim in the air! Here is a full-scale sample of sperm whale that will be unveiled for the first time. We dive in the deep sea more than 1000 meters and eat and eat rhubarb squid etc. The largest among whales, its length is a whopping 16 meters. However, I was stunned by the size ….

The other side is a very unusual structure with exposed skin and internal structure. By the way, just behind the sperm whales, about 40 kinds of stuffed animals such as reindeer and oryx are lined up, but it seems that whales and reindeers are known to be systematically similar evolutionary by recent DNA analysis .

We approach mechanism of movement movement (rocomotion)!

One of the themes of this exhibition is "Locomotion" . In order to find food and prey, meet females, leave off their offspring, and live their lives, mammals have developed means of transport for different environments.

In this exhibition, through the latest analysis videos and skeletal specimens, we are approaching a diverse and free movement mechanism that differs from fish and reptiles.

Honorable Cheetah "The Fastest On Track". It is the strongest sprinter that matches the maximum speed 100km, acceleration / deceleration, and the ability of direction control, but how is muscle used to control landing? In this exhibition, we will uncover some of the secrets.

Physical beauty not … skeletal beauty?

Bone, bone, bone … This is an exhibition of teeth and jaw bones.

From the rat to the whales, it is quite spectacular that nearly 200 skulls line up on the wall.
Teeth and jaws, such as grass, meat, insects, fish, etc., have evolved into shapes that are suitable for eating. The food items are divided and displayed, and you can compare their features.

There will also be an actual display of the “Pak Pak” skull inside the hall!
This is the skull of a killer whale. The movement of the mouth to catch the prey is elaborately reproduced.

It is obvious when you compare the teeth of a herbivore that has become like a "file" so that it is easy to grind food, and the teeth of a carnivore. It can be clearly seen that the carnivore's teeth are sharp and shaped to tear the meat.
However, it seems that it can not be deceived as "Mog Mog", and the torn meat can only be massaged as it is. For carnivores, meat is a drink.

You can actually touch and feel "Fumofufu"

A "large march" appears in the museum shop! Purchase early

The ability that mammals have acquired to survive, and their appearance.
The special exhibition “Mammals Exhibition 2 – The Survival of Everyone” teaches us the history and wonder of its evolution.
