Let’s celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in Ueno for three days on September 21st (Sat), 22nd (Sun, Autumnal Equinox), and 23rd (Mon, substitute holiday) 2024.

 

The Uenode.Panda Mid-Autumn Festival Executive Committee (Ueno Chuo Dori Shopping Association/Chugoku Television Co., Ltd.) will be holding the 2nd Uenode.Panda Mid-Autumn Festival 2024, a local revitalization event themed around eating, drinking and playing, with the aim of supporting local recovery, developing the community and enhancing culture, at Ueno Onshi Park Fountain Square over the three-day holiday from Saturday, September 21st to Monday, September 23rd, 2023 (National Holiday).

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional harvest festival in East Asia, and is as important as the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival). Since the Qin Dynasty in China, people have prayed for bountiful harvests and safety in their homes during the autumn equinox, and in Japan, moon-viewing parties have been held since the Heian period. People decorate with paper lanterns, give thanks to their ancestors, celebrate a good harvest, and share delicious mooncakes. Young people full of energy sing and dance to celebrate their youth, and people drink fine wine together. Ueno is also the home of pandas. Enjoy authentic food, culture, and human interaction.

◆Cheers with pandas and China Moutai at Ueno, the bridge of friendship!

On September 29, 1972, the long-held dream of both Japan and China was realized when diplomatic relations were normalized. At the celebration, a lavish drinking party was held with the famous Chinese liquor “Kuizhou Moutai”, and one month later, on October 28, China presented Ueno with the giant pandas “Lang Lang” and “Kang Kang”. Moutai liquor, which has a history of over 800 years in Guizhou Province, has a noble, mellow fragrance and style that evokes eternal history and culture, and is still widely used in official diplomatic settings, such as when entertaining state guests.

This year, Ueno Panda Mid-Autumn Festival will be attended by China Moutai, the company that brought the giant panda to Japan. Let’s celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with the finest taste and aroma, and toast to the rainbow bridge of friendship that connects giant pandas!

Photographer Takahiro Takauji, who runs the blog “Everyday Panda,” has been visiting Ueno Zoo for 14 years and has photographed Xiang Xiang from Sichuan Province, China. The annual Ueno Panda “Everyday Panda Special Photo Exhibition” will bring you the adorable images of the lively Xiang Xiang from Sichuan Province, and Ri Ri and Shin Shin, who are returning to China, with lots of love from Ueno. Don’t miss the popular postcard commemorating your visit!

◆ Taito Ward Social Welfare Council Event T-shirt sales

As part of a collaborative project with the Taito Ward Social Welfare Council, which has become a staple of the Uenode Panda series, the event T-shirts will be redesigned by Grip Grapp LLC, which runs the social design brand NODD, using art drawn by users of six facilities for people with disabilities in the ward. Staff will wear these T-shirts and they will also be sold at the venue. A portion of the sales will be donated to each facility. This is a new initiative that will liven up the event and contribute to society by having fun.
